Overheard in a grocery store produce aisle this afternoon, the following exchange between a mother and her maybe-10-year-old son, as they walked past a pile of miniature pale-green globes labeled "Personal Watermelons:"
Mom: Oh my God, how cute are these? Look Steven! Aren't these sooo cute?
Steven: What are they?
Mom: They're little watermelons!
Steven: Oh, I love watermelon!
The two pause next to the melons but mom doesn't go for any. She moves on, son dragging his feet behind.
Steven: How is a watermelon cute?
Mom: Because it's small and round ... like you!
I have a feeling this comment will stay with Steven for some time.
